WACO, Texas (Jan. 17, 2014) - In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20, organizations in Waco will be commemorating the life of the civil rights activist with the following activities:
Friday, Jan. 17
' 12 p.m. - A wreath-laying ceremony was held in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
Saturday, Jan. 18
' 2 p.m. - Campus Kitchen will prepare lunches for garden service volunteers in the Family and Consumer Sciences Kitchen at Baylor University.
Sunday, Jan. 19
' 2 p.m. - Campus Kitchen will prepare lunches for garden service volunteers in the Family and Consumer Sciences Kitchen at Baylor University.
Monday, Jan. 20
' 9 a.m. - Mission Waco will present the play "North Star" at the Jubilee Theater, 1319 N. 15th St. Call (254) 753-4900 for more information. Tickets are free.
' 9:30 a.m. - Annual Martin Luther King Jr. march, beginning downtown at the Waco Suspension Bridge and ending at the Bledsoe Miller Recreation Center. Free food and a program will follow the march. Non-perishable food items will be collected and donated to a local charity. For more information, contact Alice Pollard at (254) 548-1040.
' Noon-3 p.m. - Urban Gardening Coalition MLK Day of Service Projects at various locations around Waco.
' 1:15-4 p.m. - Mission Waco invites you to join them and other volunteers at the Jubilee Theatre to serve the community.
' 6 p.m. - Annual candlelight vigil at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, featuring speaker Pastor Delvin Atchison and special guest Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr. For additional information, call (254) 722-1274.
Tuesday, Jan. 21
' 11 a.m. - Dr. Harry Blake, former field secretary for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will speak at Baylor University's Truett Seminary, 1100 S. Third St.
Wednesday, Jan. 22
' Noon-1:30 p.m. - Baylor University's department of multicultural affairs, in partnership with several other campus departments and organizations, will host a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Luncheon on the fifth floor of Cashion Academic Center, 1401 S. Fourth St. The guest speaker will be Barbara Walker, the first African-American female to graduate from Baylor University. This event is invitation-only. Campus Kitchen Coordinator Jenni Moore says the day of activities is "like a Waco-wide Steppin' Out," comparing the events to Baylor University's day of service. All the projects are open to the public.
