WACO, Texas (Nov. 12, 2013) -- The C.S. Lewis 50th Memorial Conference honoring the late C.S. Lewis, Christian philosopher and author, will be co-sponsored by the Baylor University Honors Residential College and the departments of philosophy and religion at Baylor on Nov. 18, Nov. 22 and Nov. 23.
The event -- "C.S. Lewis and His Contributions to Christian Thought" -- marks the 50th anniversary of Lewis' death and is the first conference sponsored by Baylor's Program in Philosophical Studies of Religion (PPSR), a newly formed academic unit in Baylor's Institute for Studies in Religion.
Lewis is known his literary works, among them The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Mere Christianity. The Irish-Born philosopher and English professor had a deep belief in God that permeated his life's work.
Scholars and researchers will discuss aspects of Lewis' work.
The conference is $55 per person, but registration is free for Baylor faculty/staff/students and their spouses.

Monday, Nov. 18

3 to 5:30 p.m.: "On Lewis' Moral Argument for God's Existence:" Kick-off lecture by C. Stephen Evans, Ph.D., of Baylor University. Evans, University Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Baylor, won first prize in the C.S. Lewis Book Prize Competition, awarded for the best book published in the philosophy of religion or philosophical theology written for a general audience in the last five years. The lecture will be followed by a reception.
Friday, Nov. 22
Alexander Reading Room of Alexander Hall, 1413 S. Seventh St.
7 to 8:30 p.m.: Panel discussion by Erik Wielenberg, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at DePauw University, and Trent Dougherty, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Baylor, on Weilenberg's book God and the Reach of Reason: C.S. Lewis, David Hume, and Bertrand Russell. Reception will follow.
Saturday, Nov. 23

10 to 10:45 a.m.: "The Baptized Imagination: C.S. Lewis' Fictional Apologetics," presentation by Ralph Wood, Ph.D., University Professor of Theology and Literature at Baylor University.
11-11:45 a.m.: "Lewis on the Problem of Animal Suffering." Lecture by Trent Dougherty, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Baylor.
Noon to 1 p.m. -- Lunch with talk by Francis Beckwith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy and church-state studies at Baylor
1- 1:45 p.m.: "Divine Deception," lecture by Erik Wielenberg, associate professor of philosophy at DePauw University.
2-2:45 p.m.: "On Learning in Wartime." Lecture by Alan Jacobs, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Literature at Baylor University, with response by David L. Jeffrey, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Literature and Humanities at Baylor.
3-3:45 p.m.: Panel Discussion with William Weaver, Ph.D., associate professor of literature at Baylor; Scott Moore, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy and great texts at Baylor; and Douglas Henry, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at Baylor.
4-4:45 p.m.: "Lewis Argument from Desire," lecture by Todd Buras, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at Baylor.
