WACO, Texas - Family businesses, both large and small, across Texas are among winners in the seventh annual Outstanding Family Business Awards competition sponsored by Baylor University's Institute for Family Business.
The award-winning businesses include restaurants in South Texas, the Panhandle, and Central Texas, along with firms in Wichita Falls, Dallas, San Marcos, Temple and Corsicana.
Members of the public and more than 250 chambers of commerce throughout Texas were asked to nominate top family firms for the competition. Each year, the institute honors those firms which demonstrate strong business and family values.
Winner of the small business category, with 50 or fewer employees, is Cloud Construction Co., Temple; the medium-sized category award (51-250 employees) goes to Berend Bros. of Wichita Falls; and the large firm category award (more than 250 employees) will be presented to Darr Equipment Co., Dallas.
Other winners include: Family Values Award, McCoy's Building Supply Centers, San Marcos; Founders Award (for maintaining the original concepts of the founders), Collin Street Bakery, Corsicana; Well-Managed Family Business Award, Oliver Sales, Dallas; Fastest-Growing Family Business Award, Dyer's Barbecue, Pampa; and Community Commitment Award, Poppa Rollo's Pizza, Waco, and Siesta Restaurant, Victoria.
"Many members of the public nominate firms for the contest each year," said Bob Hughes, program director of the Institute for Family Business. "Some have been loyal customers of these businesses for decades."
Hughes said more than 200 family businesses were nominated for this year's contest. The six judges for the contest included family business consultants and advisers and principals of successful family firms in Texas.
The awards will be presented Thursday, Oct. 24, at a banquet in Austin. Entertainment will be provided by the legendary Light Crust Doughboys.
