Calvin College Professor Will Lecture Feb. 21 on "Teaching and Christian Practice"

WACO, Texas (Feb. 20, 2013) - Some worry the bond between faith and learning is becoming less cohesive. In response to this concern, Baylor's Institute for Faith and Learning and Academy for Teaching and Learning welcome David I. Smith, Ph.D., as he lectures on "Teaching and Christian Practice."
In his presentation, Smith will invite reflection on the practice of teaching and the connection between pedagogy and Christian higher education. The lecture, sponsored by Baylor's Institute for Faith and Learning, will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Bennett Auditorium in Draper Academic Building, 1420 S. Seventh St.
"One of the central concerns of a university like Baylor is how its teaching might be animated by the Christian faith," said Darin Davis, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of Baylor's Institute for Faith and Learning.
"David Smith lectures internationally about how particular Christian practices and virtues give shape to what professors teach. He is recognized as a leading authority on pedagogy, and he is an imaginative and winsome speaker. We are delighted he is joining us as we think concretely about our commitment to transformational education," Davis said.
Smith is the director of the Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning and professor of German at Calvin College. He has published several books and articles, including his most recent book, "Teaching and Christian practices: Reshaping faith and learning." Smith graduated with honors from the University of Oxford and earned his Ph.D. at the University of London.
