WACO, Texas (Feb. 1, 2013) -Baylor University welcomes Alan Jacobs, Ph.D., The Clyde S. Kilby Chair Professor of English at Wheaton College, as the next guest speaker in its Honors College lecture series. The event will take place at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the Drawing Room of Memorial Residence Hall, 1425 S. Seventh St.
The lecture is titled "Christian Humanism in Time of War," and studies the journey of poet W.H. Auden, literary scholar C.S. Lewis and theologian Jacques Maritain to believing that a restored and enriched model of Christian humanism is the greatest need in a time of unprecedented global war.
The subject of Jacobs' lecture stems from his interests in hermeneutics, philosophy, literary theory, modern British literature and history of criticism. He will further contribute his knowledge in these areas to Baylor students when he joins the Honors College faculty beginning in fall 2013.
"Before ever attending a lecture by Alan Jacobs or hearing him interviewed on Mars Hill Audio, I had taught two of his essay anthologies for Honors Colloquia," said Andrew Wisely, Ph.D., associate professor of German and director of the Honors Program at Baylor. "His description of the moral essay as a genre I found only slightly less interesting than the insights his own writing-in-motion provided. He discussed everything from Bob Dylan to his own suspicion about outsourcing decisions to his personal computer."
Jacobs has authored numerous books including "The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C.S. Lewis" (2006), "Looking Before and After: Testimony and the Christian Life" (2008), "Sin: A Cultural History" (2009), "Wayfaring: Essays Pleasant and Unpleasant" (2010) and "The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction" (2011).
"A welcome presence in Baylor's Honor College, his lecture 'Christian Humanism in Time of War' draws upon his enduring interest in Lewis, Auden and Maritain, and I suspect that we'll see another volume from him soon with those three names in the title," Wisely said.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For additional information on Jacobs and future Honors College lectures, click here.
