Acting English Chair, Undergraduate Director Named

August 20, 1996

Dr. Maurice Hunt, professor of English, and Dr. Dianna Vitanza, associate professor of English and vice provost for academic affairs, have been named acting chair and director of undergraduate studies, respectively of the Baylor University Department of English.
They will serve in these capacities for the 1996-97 academic year. A national search committee will be formed to find a permanent chair, according to Dr. Wallace Daniel, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
A member of the Baylor faculty since 1981, Hunt began his career as an assistant professor of English. He was promoted to associate professor in 1987 and professor in 1993. Other areas in which Hunt serves include director of freshman composition and director of the writing center.
Vitanza joined the Baylor faculty in 1982. She served as writing center director from 1983-87 and as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1987-93. In 1995 Vitanza was named vice provost for academic affairs. She also has taught at the University of Houston and Eastern Illinois University.
Making the permanent chair's job easier is Hunt's immediate priority, he said.
"I want to make the transition to the next chair orderly and harmonious," Hunt said.
