Baylor's Martin Museum of Art Hosts Keith Carter Exhibition and Reception

WACO, Texas (Sept. 11, 2012) - Baylor University's Martin Museum of Art will host a photography exhibit by artist Keith Carter. The exhibit, Fireflies, features images reminiscent of childhood memories. Informed by Carter's own imagination-filled days, these images allow the viewer to escape to the stories, dreams, and fantasy worlds of a child's mind.
Carter said that the children in his photos "inhabit a peaceable kingdom where everything that falls deserves a chance to be restored."
The collection includes both new work and iconic images such as "Fireflies," "The Waltz," "Chicken Feathers," "Megan's New Shoes" and "Angel," selected from all of Carter's rare and out-of-print books. These images represent childhood memories in Beaumont.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Horton Foote said that, "Keith Carter has the gift of taking things we have seen all our lives and giving them another dimension, a beauty that you can't easily get rid of."
Carter is an internationally recognized photographer and educator from Madison, Wis. He holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in Beaumont where he is a Distinguished Faculty Lecturer and was named the 2010 Texas State University System Regents Professor.
The exhibit will be held in Gallery II of the Martin Museum of Art in Baylor University's Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center, 60 Baylor Ave. Admission is free and open to the public. The talk and reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13.
