WACO, Texas (May 24, 2012) - Dr. Rafer S. Lutz, chair and associate professor of health, human performance and recreation at Baylor's School of Education, died Wednesday, May 23, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 42.

A memorial service for Lutz is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, in the Paul W. Powell Chapel at George W. Truett Theological Seminary on the Baylor campus.

"A gentle soul, Rafer was a person of deep convictions and personal strength," said Dr. Jon M. Engelhardt, dean of the School of Education. "In May 2011, he was diagnosed with cancer, an ultimately fatal diagnosis for which he demonstrated for all of us how to face our own mortality as a steadfast Christian--being realistic about his situation yet positive in his faith and charity toward others. While we will miss him, we celebrate his life."

Lutz is survived by his wife Lori, two children William and Carson, his father and step-mother, and his many friends and Baylor colleagues.

Please keep the Lutz family in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the numerous faculty, staff and students influenced by Dr. Lutz throughout the years.
