Northcutt Lecture Welcomes Church Music Scholar with Expertise in Asian Music

Dr. I-toh Loh, adjunct professor of worship, church music and ethnomusicology at Tainan Theological College and Seminary in Taiwan, will present the Baylor University School of Music's 26th annual Northcutt Lecture in Church Music at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Meadows Recital Hall of the Glennis McCrary Music Building on the Baylor campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Recognized as a church musician, hymnologist, composer and ethnomusicologist with an expertise in Asian music, Loh will lecture on "From Transplantation to Globalization of Church Music: Can Anything Good Come Out of Asia?"

Loh also serves as an adjunct professor at Taiwan Theological College and Seminary and the Southeast Asia Graduate School of Theology. He has served as editor of "Seng-si," the official hymnal of the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan (2009), "Sound the Bamboo" (1990-2000), "Hymns from the Four Winds" (1983) and a number of other collections of congregational song. He has compiled several collections of anthems by Asian composers and composed numerous published anthems and hymn tunes, as well as several larger works.

In 2011, Loh's "Hymnal Companion to Sound the Bamboo: Asian Hymns in Their Cultural and Liturgical Contexts" was published by G.I.A. Publications. He has contributed articles to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Hymnology Annual and many periodicals, including Theology and Church, the theological journal of Tainan Theological College and Seminary. He also has presented addresses and lectures at meetings of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, the Japanese Hymn Society, the Societas Liturgica, the International Hymnological Society and other organizations.

The Northcutt Lecture in Church Music was established in 1985 by LeGrande and Cassandra Northcutt of Longview, Texas. It brings major scholars in the philosophy or practice of church music to Baylor's campus.
