SMU Professor of Geochemistry Begins Baylor Geology Fall Colloquium Series

Dr. Crayton J. Yapp, professor of geochemistry at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, will lecture on "Rusty Geochemical Records of Earth's Surficial Environments" at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in room E231 of the Baylor Sciences Building on the Baylor University campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Baylor department of geology's colloquium series offered every semester. Unless otherwise noted, lectures are held on Fridays at 3 p.m. in room E231 of the BSB.

Yapp's research interests include: stable isotope and minor element geochemistry of low temperature systems, paleoclimates from geochemical proxies, the water cycle, and goethite-bearing deposits and ancient atmosphere. He received his doctoral degree from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif., and has published many articles including: "Ancient Atmospheric CO2 Pressures Inferred from Natural Goethites" and "Paleoenvironment and the Oxygen Isotope Geochemistry of the Upper Ordovician Neda Formation Ironstone."

' Dr. Dan Lehrmann, Pyron Distinguished Professor at Trinity University in San Antonio, will speak on "Impact of tectonic subsidence, basin fill, margin stability and seawater chemistry on carbonate platform evolution: Triassic, South China," on Friday, Sept. 16.

' Dr. Corey R. Lawrence, Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow of the U.S. Geological Survey, will lecture on dust geochemistry on Friday, Sept. 23.

' Chandini Revanna, Baylor chemical hygiene officer, will discuss general laboratory safety training on Friday, Sept. 30.

' Dr. Kitty L. Milliken, senior research scientist of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin, will speak on gas shale on Friday, Oct. 21.

' Dr. Ronald Amundson, professor and chair of the department of environmental science, policy and management at the University of California, Berkeley, will speak on paleosol related paleoclimates on Friday, Oct. 28.

' Christina Chan-Park, Baylor science librarian, will present a workshop on Baylor library resources on Friday, Nov. 4.

' Dr. David E. Fastovsky, professor and chair of the department of geosciences at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I., will lecture on Friday, Nov. 18.

' Dr. Oliver Chadwick, professor of geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will speak on "Pre-European contact Hawaiian agriculture, Hawaiian land use choices and the implications of surplus agricultural production for development of cultural complexity" on Friday, Dec. 2.
