Fall Physics Colloquium Series Begins Aug. 31

Dr. Anzhong Wang, professor of physics at Baylor University, will begin the 2011 Fall Physics Colloquium Series with a lecture at 4 p.m., Aug. 31, in room E125 of the Baylor Sciences Building.
Wang will present "Anisotropic Scalings and Horava's Theory of Quantum Gravity: Current Status," and will introduce anisotropic scalings of space and time in the Lifshitz theory of scalar fields. He will then apply the topics to quantum gravity, as was recently proposed by physicist Petr Horava in the Horava-Lifshitz theory. Wang also will explain the theory's challenges and how they may be resolved by spreading the theory's gauge symmetry of the foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms to include a local U(1) symmetry.
Wang's presentation is the first in a semester-long series including speakers:
