Regional History Fair Set for Feb. 2

January 30, 1996

WACO, Texas - The 11th annual Heart of Texas Regional History Fair is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, on the second and third floors of the Bill Daniel Student Center and the Marrs-McLean Gymnasium at Baylor University.
Throughout the school year, students in grades 5-12 engage in research to prepare papers, projects, performances and media presentations based on the 1995-96 theme "Taking a Stand in History: Individuals, Groups, Movements."
The competition is divided into three divisions: 5th grade, junior (grades 6-8) and senior (grades 9-12). The 5th graders compete in individual or group project categories only, while the junior and senior divisions each compete in seven categories.
Students from the counties of Bell, Bosque, Brazos, Falls, Freestone, Hill, Limestone, McLennan, Milam and Robertson are eligible to enter. Regional winners advance to Texas History Day in April in Austin, and perhaps the National History Fair in June in Washington, D. C.
In addition to the prepared projects, the contest day provides for a series of activities in which the students learn more about history through research. Research may take students into such areas as oral interviews, newspaper or manuscript collections, family letters and photographs and historical sites.
Registration will be from 8-10 a.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center. Projects will be set up in the Marrs-McLean Gymnasium. Judging of performances and media categories will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Workshops will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center. The awards ceremony will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room.
