Eclectic American Watercolor Society International Traveling Exhibition On Display at Martin Museum of Art

Depictions of exposed pipes, perfect reflections in shop windows, vivid abstract designs, nature and lifelike portraits help make up the very eclectic 40-piece watercolor exhibition coming to Baylor University's Martin Museum of Art located in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center through Aug. 13.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
The 144th American Watercolor Society International Traveling Exhibition was created by the American Watercolor Society. Paintings for the exhibition were selected from 108 paintings in the original New York exhibition. The New York exhibition works were chosen from more than 1,000 entries submitted to an elected jury.
Highlights in the exhibition include Rose Edin's vivid award winning piece "Beauty and the Beast," that depicts camels waiting for riders by the Great Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. Other artists to look out for are David L. Stickel, an artist of reflection, Kathleen Conover, who explores industry and adaptation through the use of a raven in "Change is in the Air," and Joyce Hicks, a landscape artist.
Hicks, a 2011-2012 American Watercolor Society award winner, will host a free gallery and demonstration at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 13. The event is open to the public.
Baylor University is one of two places in Texas that the exhibition will stop.
"It all really began when Baylor's beloved friend, Dr. Faber McMullen, donated his watercolor collection to the university," Karin Gilliam, director of the Martin Museum of Art said.
It was at the dedication of the faculty center - named for McMullen - in 2008 that Gilliam met Helen Napoli, chairman of the AWS Traveling Exhibition and friend of the McMullens. Upon meeting they began discussing the possibility of bringing the exhibition to Baylor.
"We have been planning and preparing for it ever since," said Gilliam. "Dr. McMullen passed away unexpectedly in 2009, so this is indeed a tribute to his memory."
The Martin Museum of Art is located at 60 Baylor Ave.
Hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays
