Baylor's School of Music Presents Pipe Organ Encounter June 5-10

The School of Music will present the 2011 edition of Pipe Organ Encounter from Sunday, June 5, through Friday, June 10. This year's POE brings 24 students from as far away as California and Hawaii for a week of intensive organ study on the Baylor University campus. The Central Texas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is co-sponsor of the event.
Joyce Jones, Organist-in-Residence at Baylor University, will perform the opening event in this year's Pipe Organ Encounter at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 5, in Waco Hall. Her recital -- designed to show the many colors of the Walker Organ -- will feature works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, César Franck, and Leo Sowerby. It is the first performance on the splendid new organ in Waco Hall since the dedicatory concert on March 27.
Next, Stephen Morris will play an organ recital on 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, in Paul Powell Chapel at Truett Theological Seminary.
Aaron Garcia and Jordan Peek will be heard in a joint organ recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building.
The silent movie Phantom of the Opera will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, in Roxy Grove Hall, with organ accompaniment by Stephen Morris. This will be the famous 1925 version, starring the "man of a thousand faces," Lon Chaney.
The week will close with a recital by POE students at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, in Jones Concert Hall.
