Jackson to Give Trombone Recital Jan. 13

David Jackson, Baylor University's assistant professor of trombone, will perform a faculty recital at 4 p.m. Saturday Jan. 13, in Roxy Grove Hall. His program will consist of music by Stjepan Sulek, William Simmes, Michael East, Folke Rabe and Frank Ticheli.
The opening work on his recital, Sulek's Sonata for Trombone and Piano, is subtitled "Vox Gabrieli." In it, Jackson will be accompanied by pianist John Cozza. The first half of the program will also feature "Fantasia" by William Simmes and "Amavi" ("I Loved") by the Elizabethan composer Michael East. Jackson will be joined by the other four members of the Baylor Faculty Brass Quintet: trumpeters Barry Hopper and Vern Sielert, hornist Margaret Robinson, and tubist Michael Fischer.
Following intermission, Jackson will turn to two 20th-century trombone pieces. "Basta!" ("Enough!") was written by Folke Rabe, who was born in 1935. The "Concertino" of 37-year-old composer Frank Ticheli is in three movements: "Dialogue," "Interlude," and "Dance." Assisting Jackson will be percussionist Larry Vanlandingham and pianists Michael Ard and James Williams.
Jackson joined the Baylor music this fall, after serving as a lecturer in low brass at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. A graduate of Permian High School in Odessa, he holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He has performed in the brass sections of such major orchestras as the Detroit Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, and the New World Symphony.
