Authors Will Speak on Writing and Faith, Movie Premiere Will Follow

Authors Donald Miller and Anne Lamott will host a conversation on faith and the art of writing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building on the Baylor campus.

Hosted by the Honors College, the two will speak on writing as an act of faith. Both write extensively on issues of faith and spirituality in memoirs and fiction. Audience members will be given the opportunity to ask questions after the lecture.

"Anne Lamott and Donald Miller are two of the most prolific writers of our time," said Michael Riemer, associate director of Department of Student Activities. "The opportunity to have both of them on stage together, which has never happened before, will be a rare opportunity for the Baylor community to be a part of something unique."

Miller is the author of Through Painted Deserts and A Thousand Miles in a Million Years. Lamott is the author of Traveling Mercies and Imperfect Birds.

Tickets are available at the Bill Daniel Student Center and are complimentary for Baylor students, faculty and staff. For the public, tickets are $10 for preferred seating and $20 for preferred seating and admission to a private book signing with Lamott. The signing will take place at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at a location not yet announced.

Free advance screenings of "Blue Like Jazz the Movie" will be presented at 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, and at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, in the Sony Theater of the Mayborn Museum. Written by Miller and directed by Steven Taylor, the movie has never been shown before.

Taylor and Miller will be on hand to receive critique and comments which may contribute to editing and improvements made to the film, Riemer said.

The movie is based on Miller's book, Blue Like Jazz.

"The book itself is an exceptional work," Riemer said. "Miller is quite forthcoming. The book is a refreshing read."

The screening is hosted by the Department of Student Activities, the department of film and digital Media and the Office of Spiritual Life.
