Baylor Engineering Seminar Welcomes North Korean Professor to Discuss Pyongyang University of Science and Technology

Dr. Yu-Taik Chon, professor of electrical engineering at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology in North Korea, will lecture at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, in room 312 of the Rogers Engineering and Computer Science Building on the Baylor University campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is a part of eBEARS: Electrical and Computer Engineering- Baylor Engineering and Research Seminars. The seminar series is offered each semester by the Baylor School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Chon will lecture on "Pyongyang University of Science and Technology: A Christian University in North Korea!?!" He will discuss the university, which was founded by American evangelical scholars and opened its doors to 160 undergraduate and master's students in fall 2010.

After receiving his bachelor's degree at Seoul National University in South Korea, Chon attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., where he received his master's and doctoral degrees. From 1973 to 2003, he researched oil and gas exploration for Gulf Oil, British Petroleum and Baker Hughes, before becoming a professor at Yanbian University and Science and Technology in Yanji, China.

Chon, a member of the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology faculty since 2010, was born in Pyongyang in 1940. He is a permanent resident of Houston.
