To conclude its Distinguished Artist Series, the School of Music will host Emanuel Ax, one of the world's foremost pianists, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, in Roxy Grove Hall on the Baylor campus.

The recital will include Franz Schubert's 1827 collection of four "Impromptus, D. 935," composed the year before his death.

Ax also will perform Schubert's "Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, D. 664." He will conclude with Schubert's "Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D. 960." This was also completed shortly before his death at the age of 31.

A native of Lvov, Poland, Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, as a young boy before studying at the Juilliard School in New York. He then attended Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in French.

Ax won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1974 and then won the Michaels Award of Younger Concert Artists in 1975.

He also teamed up with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman to record the "Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49" and "No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66" in celebration of the Mendelssohn Bicentennial last year.

Ax performs internationally as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, chamber musician and recording artist.

Tickets are $10 for Baylor students and $15 for others.
