Biomedical Ethics Professor Will Speak on Ethics in 21st Century to Continue Presidential Symposium Series

Dr. Baruch A. Brody, Leon Jaworski Professor of Biomedical Ethics at Baylor College of Medicine and Andrew Mellon Professor of Humanities at Rice University, will present the first Presidential Symposium Series lecture of the semester from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the Kayser Auditorium located in the Hankamer School of Business on the Baylor University campus.

Also director of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine, Brody will speak on ethics in the 21st century. He has been recognized as BCM's Distinguished Service Professor, the college's highest faculty honor.

Currently, he is exploring issues in intellectual property and biotechnology. He has extensive background in the field of applied ethics.

Brody has helped 11 health care institutions organize their ethics committees, and served for more than 15 years as the head of the ethics program at the Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Author of more than 25 books and 150 articles and chapters, Brody's most prominent scholarly works include Ethical Issues in Drug Testing, Approval and Pricing (Oxford: 1994) and The Ethics of Biomedical Research: An International Perspective (Oxford: 1998).

He also was among the first bio-ethicists to discuss abortion following Roe v. Wade with his book Abortion and the Sanctity of Human Life (M.I.T.: 1975).

The series, which is free and open to the public, honors Judge Ken Starr's first year as president of Baylor University. The series features speakers who address on topics relevant to the Baylor mission in the context of national and global perspectives.
