Baylor Names Faculty-In-Residence for Allen and Dawson Halls

Baylor University has announced an additional faculty-in-residence for fall 2010 who will further Baylor's commitment to integrating learning in and out of the classroom.

Dr. Douglas W. Rogers, associate dean for undergraduate programs and student and information services and associate professor of curriculum and instruction in the School of Education, will serve beginning this fall as the first faculty member-in-residence in Allen and Dawson Halls. He will work closely with the Leadership-Living Learning Center and the Air Force ROTC-Living Learning Center.

Rogers will join Dr. T. Laine Scales (Kokernot), Professor Steven C. Pounders (University House, North Village), Drs. Douglas V. and Michele L. Henry (Brooks College), Professor Cynthia C. Fry (Heritage House, North Village), Dr. Julie A. Sweet (Texana House, North Village) and Dr. Sarah-Jane Murray (Honors Residential College, Alexander-Memorial) to comprise a cohort of eight faculty members living in residence at Baylor.

"We are truly indebted to our outstanding faculty-in-residence for their strategic efforts to partner with Campus Living and Learning to connect residents and faculty in the residential communities," said Terri L. Garrett, interim assistant dean for Campus Living and Learning.

Rogers received his B.S. at Baylor, and his M.L.S. and Ed.D at East Texas University. He returned to Baylor in August 1987 and has served in various capacities, including 15 years as director of the Center for Educational Technology and later as the university liaison for the Waco High Professional Development School. Most recently, he taught in the university's inaugural Engaged Learning Groups (ELG) that focused on Hispanic Families in Transition.

"As the newest member of the faculty-in-residence initiative at Baylor, I'm looking forward to what students will teach me about how we integrate learning experiences that take place both within and outside the traditional learning structures of classes, courses, majors, degrees, etc.," Rogers said. "I look forward to being part of a community that is intentional about learning from every aspect of university life--our intellectual pursuits, our social interactions, our recreation and leisure, and our spiritual development."

Faculty apply to serve as faculty-in-residence and are selected by a committee representing both academic affairs and student life at Baylor and jointly appointed by Dr. Elizabeth Davis, executive vice president and provost, and Dr. Kevin Jackson, vice president for student life.

"Adding a faculty-in-residence to Allen-Dawson is another step in our continuing efforts to enhance the learning and living environment here at Baylor," Jackson said. "Our students report a greater sense of connection with their academic experience as well as stronger ties with the university when they live on campus--and these experiences are magnified when faculty are actively engaged in the Campus Living and Learning community. We are most appreciative to the faculty who undertake these roles and to the university for providing the resources to move the faculty-in-residence initiative forward."
