Baylor Summer Programs Attract More Than 10,000 Visitors

WACO, Texas -- Summer programs and camps at Baylor University this year attracted more than 10,000 visitors from 69 groups and brought more than $967,000 to the university, according to Jack Thornton, university host.
The 1995 total was 10,237 visitors, compared to 12,323 visitors in 1994, Thornton said. "We were down slightly in our overall total, but that was because two youth groups from Mississippi and several choir and band camps were absent this year," he explained.
"But overall, we had a very active summer. We always bring in a lot of junior high-age visitors, and in a few years, they often enroll here as freshmen to attend college. So in a sense, they are paying us to recruit them. It's important that our summer program participants feel that they've had an enjoyable time here on campus."
Programs included basketball, baseball, volleyball, cross country and tennis camps, band camps, debate camps, aerobics workshops, drill team programs, and education and pastors conferences and senior citizen activities, among others.
Thornton said more than $19,000 was raised through user fees to help support Baylor's cheerleaders in 1995-96, with much of that money going to travel expenses.
