Baylor University Selected to Participate in Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program

Juliana Feden, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program winner, will teach Portuguese each semester for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTAP) gives young educators the ability to refine their teaching skills, while engaging in non-degree studies at accredited post-secondary U.S. educational institutions. Along with their studies, FLTAs teach language courses.

Dr. Lilly Souza-Fuertes, assistance professor and director Latin American studies at Baylor, prepared and submitted the application for the program.

"The program is highly competitive and the student who is selected receives tuition remission from the graduate school so they can take graduate courses while they teach," Souza-Fuertes said.

"It's a great experience for students to take Portuguese because they will have not only a graduate student teaching, but someone with a knowledge of current on goings in culture and language in Brazil," Souza-Fuertes said.

Since 1968, the Institute of International Education (IIE) has administered the FLTAP on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, the program's sponsor. The program is aimed at strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. educational institutions by establishing a native-speaker presence.

The IIE is an independent non-profit organization that provides a wide range of services to and administers programs for corporations, foundations, government partners, and international agencies.
