Honors College Dean To Speak At Academic Convocation April 14

Dr. Thomas Hibbs, dean of Baylor University's Honors College, will serve as the featured speaker during Academic Convocation at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, in the Foyer of Meditation in Armstrong Browning Library. Hibbs' address, "Excellence and Service," is part of the 12th annual Harry and Anna Jeanes Honors Week.
"I'm very excited to be entering into my first Honors Week at Baylor, a week that allows us to acknowledge in some small way some of the excellent academic work of our students and the faculty who guide, challenge, and inspire them," said Hibbs, who also serves as Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Culture.
Former chair and professor of philosophy at Boston College, Hibbs became the first permanent dean of Baylor's Honors College in July 2003. The Washington, D.C., native earned his bachelor's degree in literature and his master's degree in philosophy from the University of Dallas. He holds a master's degree and doctorate in medieval studies from the University of Notre Dame, where he served as a James Mooney Visiting Scholar and a Fellow in the Center for the Philosophy of Religion.
Hibbs has edited works of Augustine and Aquinas and authored two books on Aquinas. He also is the author of Shows About Nothing: Nihilism in Popular Culture from The Exorcist to Seinfeld. He reviews films and writes about cultural issues for National Review Online and reviews books for The Weekly Standard.
Honors Week celebrates the academic accomplishments of some of the brightest students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The week's core activities will begin April 13 with students' presentations of their senior honors thesis. Presentations will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13; from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 14; from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 15; and from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 16. All presentations will take place at Morrison Hall room 205.
