Baylor University will host a Lenten service at the 10 and 11 a.m. Chapel services Wednesday, April 7, in Waco Hall.
The service will begin with a time of worship music, followed by a viewing of the crucifixion scene from Franco Zeffirelli's 1977 classic Jesus of Nazareth.
Chapel worship leader Ryan Richardson and Dean of Chapel Dr. Todd Lake chose to show the film to give students another perspective on the crucifixion than the most recent depiction in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.
"The crucifixion in all its realness is simply impossible to capture on film, but artists do the best they can," he said. "With The Passion being one artist's representation of this event, we wanted to give students a chance to view another artist's work, not to contradict but rather to enhance their knowledge of the event."
"Wednesday is not the day to rejoice over Christ's resurrection, but instead to recognize the death of Christ, so that when [Easter] Sunday comes, it's all the more meaningful for the students," he said.
Richardson said that the worship music will feature classic hymns, such as "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" and "Were You There," rather than the more contemporary songs Chapel students are used to singing.
