Baylor Law Alumna Appointed General Counsel for the Office of the Governor

Caren Cook Burbach, a Baylor Law School alumna, has been appointed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry as general counsel for the Office of the Governor. The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice to the governor and his team, handling the broad range of issues encountered in leading the second largest state in the U.S.

Burbach, who is a 1985 graduate of the Law School, is an attorney in the Business Law Section with the University of Texas System Office of General Counsel, where she specializes in intellectual property matters and business law. She is former president, vice president of business affairs, general counsel and secretary for XTRA On-Line Corp., a technology development and marketing company. She also held several positions, including vice president, general counsel and secretary, at AMADEUS Global Distribution System LLC, a leading technology provider to the travel and tourism industries, where she worked from 1987-1998.

Burbach is a Red Cross volunteer case worker, co-founder and past member of the Greater Houston Harvest Board of Directors and a member of Leadership Houston Class XI. Burbach and her husband, Ed Burbach, also founded Greater Houston Harvest, a non-profit organization that provided food free of charge to local Houston shelters. She was selected by the Houston Post and Texas Executive Women as one of 10 Women on the Move, and received the Channel 11 KHOU Spirit of Texas Award.

Burbach received her bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University. Ed Burbach is a partner with Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP and formerly served as Texas Deputy Attorney General for Civil Litigation. They have two children, Caroline, 13, and Beau, 10.
