Wind Ensemble Performs First Spring Concert On Feb. 20

The Baylor University Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the spring semester at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building. The 63-member ensemble performs under the direction of Kevin Sedatole, associate professor of music and director of bands.
The program will open with Patrick Dunnigan's arrangement of nine pieces from Tielman Susato's 16th-century collection of dance tunes, The Danserye, followed by the original band version of Gabriel Fauré's Chant funéraire from 1921. Fauré later adapted the work as the slow movement of his Second Cello Sonata. Barry Kraus, assistant professor of music and associate director of bands, will conduct.
The program also will feature ImPercynations by American composer Steven Bryant, which he said uses "various melodies and melodic fragments from each of the six movements of Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy as foils for each other, so that the entire work is built from material drawn from Grainger's original." Christopher Bianco, continuing lecturer in ensembles and assistant director of bands, will conduct.
Following intermission, the Wind Ensemble will play John Philip Sousa's Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, followed by David Del Tredici's two-movement In Wartime and Donald Grantham's free fantasy for band on Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita No. 1, J. S. Dances. James Williams, professor of piano and director of Baylor's keyboard studies division, will perform as soloist in the Grantham piece.
