February 3, 2004

by Richard Veit

The Guilford Trio -- formed in 1996 to explore the intriguing repertoire for voice, viola, and piano -- will present a Baylor University concert on Wednesday, February 4, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall.
Comprised of mezzo-soprano Deidra Palmour, violist Noah Chaves, and pianist Noel Lester, the Guilford Trio have recorded several compact discs for Koch International Classics, most notably an acclaimed collection of songs by the American impressionist, Charles Martin Loeffler.
Their Baylor recital will open with "Es ist vollbracht" from Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion and then four songs by Loeffler. Other vocal selections to be sung by Deidra Palmour are Wayne Wold's set of three songs called My Hope, My Salvation, My All, two songs by Johannes Brahms, three of the Five American Songs by English composer Nicholas Maw, "None But the Lonely Heart" (Mignon's Song) by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and "Élégie" by Jules Massenet.
In addition to the vocal works, Noel Lester will present Brian Dykstra's Spring Beauties for solo piano, and he will be joined by Noah Chaves in a performance of the opening movement from Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Sonata for Viola and Piano.
This guest recital is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor University School of Music at 710-3991.
