Black Heritage Banquet To Feature Essence Editor

Baylor University's Association of Black Students (ABS) will kick off Black Heritage Month with a banquet at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Center in Hankamer School of Business. The banquet, with the theme "Rewriting the Future by Recording the Past," is open to the public.
Susan L. Taylor, editorial director of the popular black women's magazine, Essence, will be the featured guest speaker. Taylor began her journalism career as a freelance writer for Essence, moved to editor-in-chief and then became editorial director in 2000. She writes the monthly "In the Spirit" column and is currently launching a new magazine. She also is the founder of her own company, Nequai Cosmetics.
"This year's banquet is special because we are trying to provide motivation to others for the future through the simple act of listening to someone's past," said Camonia Long, a Baylor senior and president of ABS.
ABS was founded in 1982 to help unite the African American students on campus and to encourage interaction between races.
