Global Issues Lecture To Host Linguist

Stephen Watters, international advisor to the Linguistic Survey in Nepal, will present "Language Diversity: A Tool for Unification or Division? Observations from Nepal" at 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5, in room 116 at Draper Academic Building on the Baylor University campus.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Global Issues Lecture Series and presented by Baylor's Center for International Education.
Watters served as a linguist in Nepal for the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) International, which is a faith-based organization that studies, documents and assists in developing the world's lesser-known languages. His lecture will discuss the opportunities and challenges of developing a language in Nepal. Watters will focus on linguistic research, working with language communities and translation issues.
"The goal of these lectures is to expose and inform students, faculty and staff to events that have had a global impact," said Dr. Lilly Souza-Fuertes, coordinator of the Global Issues Series and director of Latin American studies at Baylor. "It is always a unique opportunity to have a different perspective on issues that affect us all."
When Watters lived in Nepal, he worked as a lecturer for the Central Department of Linguistics at Tribhuvan University, where he taught phonetics, phonology and conducted various research projects.
