Honors College Hosts "Violence, Unshareability and the Heart" Lecture

Dr. Patrick Downey, professor and chair of philosophy at Saint Mary's College of California, will present his lecture "Violence, Unshareability and the Heart" at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in the Memorial Drawing Room on the Baylor campus.

The event is free and open to the public. The lecture series is hosted by Baylor's Honors College and features scholars and authors throughout the year. The series is designed to stimulate thought and discussion.

"My lecture will be about the hidden and manifest violence that flows from our heart because we cannot share with one another the things we love the most, starting with our own bodies," Downey said.

Downey is the author of Desperately Wicked: Philosophy, Christianity, and the Human Heart and Serious Comedy: The Philosophical and Theological Significance of Tragic and Comic Writing in the Western Tradition. His lecture will examine classical philosophy, Greek tragedy and Christianity.

"Where shall we find an object of desire that can be shared, especially when our desires each arise out of our own separate bodies? That is the question I would like to address," Downey said.

Downey specializes in ethics, political philosophy, foundational theology and poetic areas of interest, such as Plato, Aristotle, Greek tragedy, Kierkegaard, Machiavelli and others.
