Services Held Nov. 15 For Dr. Bruce Thompson

Dr. E. Bruce Thompson, professor emeritus of history and former chair of Baylor University's department of history, died Nov. 13 at a Waco hospital. He was 94.
Graveside services were held Nov. 15 at Oakwood Cemetery with Dr. John Shepard officiating.
"An era has passed for me," said Dr. Rufus Spain, professor emeritus of history and director of the Retired Professors/Administrators Program. "As my teacher and colleague, our friendship goes back to 1942. More than any other one person, Dr. Thompson pointed me to history as a profession."
Thompson was born April 29, 1909, in Laurens, S.C. He received his bachelor's degree in 1930 from Furman University, his master's degree from Vanderbilt University in 1935 and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in 1940. He taught at Baylor from 1946 until his retirement in 1973. He served as chair of the history department for 10 years. Thompson was listed in Who's Who of America and authored or co-authored several books and publications. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
He married Marguerite Wallace on Aug. 25, 1935. She preceded him in death on April 12, 1999.
Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Bruce Myman of Point Reyes, Calif.; sons, Kenneth Lloyd Thompson of Cambridge, England, and Robert Wallace Thompson of New Orleans; four grandchildren; and longtime friends, Spain and Shepard.
