Encouraging Sustainability Through Earth Week Celebrations

Baylor University's substantiality program, Baylor Renew will host events for Earth Week April 20-24 on the Baylor campus.

Earth Week will begin with the "Earth Week Sustainability Fair" at 11 a.m. Monday, April 20, at Fountain Mall on the Baylor campus.

"The sustainability fair is a great way to show what sustainable efforts are going on in the Baylor and Waco community," said Carl Flynn, director of marketing and communications for information technology and university libraries. "I think what we are doing is pretty substantial."

Earth Week also will feature an "Earth Week Teach-In," with Dr. David E. Garland, Baylor's Interim President and dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Dr. Sascha Usenko, assistant professor of environment science and Dale Barron, director of development for World Hunger Relief Inc. The workshop will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 20, on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Center on the Baylor campus.

"The workshop is an incredible time to talk about environmental issues in an open forum with community leaders and hear how their discipline is impacted by sustainability," said Flynn.

Throughout the week, Baylor Renew will encourage the campus to conserve energy through simple steps, such as turning off lights and taking stairs instead of elevators.
