The American Heart Association (AHA) will host its annual 5K Heart Walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, beginning with a ceremony at the Getterman Softball Stadium on the Baylor campus. Participants will begin the walk at the Julie and Jim Turner River Front Athletic Park.
This will be the sixth year Baylor faculty, staff, and students have participated in the Heart Walk, which raises funds for education, awareness and cardiovascular research. Baylor participants have contributed $12,000 to the AHA, which expects the Heart Walk to raise more than $100,000. At least 1,500 walkers will take part in this year's fundraiser.
Cardiovascular disease killed nearly a million Americans in 2000. One out of two people die from heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.
Baylor walkers who donate $25 or more will receive a T-shirt with the Baylor logo on it.
Other events and contests will also take place such as face painting, best dog in show contest, spirit awards and T-shirt contests. Food also will be served during the event.
