Baylor University's Symphonic Band will present music of America and the British Empire at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in Jones Concert Hall.
The 64-member Symphonic Band is conducted by Barry Kraus, associate director of bands. The Baylor University Handbell Choir, led by David W. Music, professor of church music, also will take part in the concert.
The program will open with two pieces by contemporary American composer Eric Whitacre - Noisy Wheels of Joy, which was written in the tradition of the great comic operatic overtures, and Cloudburst, a colorful depiction of a torrential desert rainstorm. The Symphonic Band also will perform John Barnes Chance's Variations on a Korean Folk Song; Percy Grainger's Gum-Suckers March, conducted by Christopher Bianco, assistant director of bands; and English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The band will conclude with Henry Fillmore's Rolling Thunder, known as one of the great circus marches of the early 20th century.
The concert is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at 710-3991.
