Baylor Theatre to Present Modern Greek Tragedy

Baylor University's theatre arts department will feature Charles L. Mee's modern remake of a Greek tragedy in "Iphigenia 2.0" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 through Feb. 28, and at 2 p.m. March 1, in Mabee Theatre at the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center on the Baylor campus.
The mythical story begins with Iphigenia, a young girl enticed with the promise to marry the honorable soldier, Achilles, by her father if she goes to a war camp. Iphigenia soon discovers her father's dishonest plan and begins to fight for her life.
"The play is a collection of images in response to war, culture and personal sacrifice," said Steven Pounders, director of "Iphigenia 2.0." "Mee freely mixes elements such as war poetry, soldier blogs, wedding anecdotes and Greek music with a smattering of pop, hip hop and rap. The events of the play are evocative of conflicting wartime experiences; atrocity, heroism, cultural hedonism and nobility."
"Iphigenia 2.0" is a medley of love, family and epic wars. Mee based the play from America's current war situation and drew inspiration from wars from the past.
Matt Tolbert, a sophomore performance studies major from Dallas, will star as Achilles; Daniel Hubbard, a senior performance major from Dallas, as Agamemnon and Natalie Baker, a senior performance major, as Iphigenia.
Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students, faculty and staff with a Baylor ID. Tickets are available at the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center box office and online at www.baylor.edu/theatre.
