Tickets are now on sale for the 2003-2004 Distinguished Artist Series at Baylor University. The series opens with the world-class chamber ensemble, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Roxy Grove Hall.
Highlights of the group's past season included a 15-city tour of Europe and an 18-city tour of Australia and New Zealand. The quartet continued its presence in New York with debut appearances for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. They were in recital at the Metropolitan Museum in November and participated in a festival of the music of John Adams, presented by Lincoln Center's Great Performers Series, in May. The quartet serves as the resident ensemble at Stanford University.
The quartet's Baylor concert will include Haydn's String Quartet in D major, Op. 76, No. 5, R. Murray Schafer's String Quartet No. 3 and Maurice Ravel's String Quartet in F major.
This year's Distinguished Artist Series also will feature the Imani Winds, a fivesome that departs from the customary woodwind quintet repertoire by offering an array of intriguing sounds from around the world. They will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Roxy Grove Hall.
Concertmaster Kenneth Sillito will bring his Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Ensemble to Waco at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Jones Concert Hall. The group is widely regarded as one of the finest small ensembles in the world, and their countless recordings have been enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike.
