Baylor SSW, Seminary to Hold MLK Silent Walk, Worship Service

Baylor University's School of Social Work and George W. Truett Theological Seminary will hold a silent walk and service of worship commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan 18. The walk will begin at the School of Social Work Plaza, 1521 S. Fourth St., and proceed to Miller Chapel in the Tidwell Bible Building on the Baylor campus. The worship service will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a reception.

The Rev. Pamela Rivera, senior minister of St. Luke's AME Church, 117 E. Church St., and a master's of divinity student at Truett Seminary, will lead the worship service. Also featured will be Baylor's Heavenly Voices Choir, the choir of St. Luke's AME, and the Christian Rap group, FLOW, led by Baylor graduate Ahmad Washington, who earned his bachelor's degree in social work in 1999, his master's degree in social work in 2001 and a master's in divinity from Truett in 2006.

"All are invited as the Baylor-Waco community comes together to celebrate and commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King," said Dr. Dennis Myers, associate dean for graduate studies at the Baylor School of Social Work, and one of the organizers of the event. "We will share in worship and thanksgiving as we reflect on the depth of his sacrifice and the power of his message."

The event has been organized by Myers; Erma Ballenger, director of graduate field education, and Gaynor Yancey, associate dean for baccalaureate studies at the Baylor School of Social Work; Tenesha Gale and Camesha Ethley, social work undergraduate students; and Aukeysia Tate and Lloyd Weatherspoon, social work graduate students.
