Alumni Association To Present First Families Of Baylor Award

The Baylor University Alumni Association will present the First Families of Baylor Award to the Cates/Garrett family tonight during the intermission of the 7 p.m. After Dark performance in Waco Hall during Parents Weekend.
The annual First Families of Baylor Award, created in 1980, recognizes a multi-generational alumni family that has shown continuing interest in and support of Baylor University. The award will be presented by Os Chrisman, interim executive vice president of the Baylor Alumni Association. The family will be honored at a reception in the Hughes-Dillard Alumni Center following the After Dark performance.
Four generations of the Cates/Garrett family have attended Baylor, including 52 family members who have earned 51 degrees. First generation students include Bobby Edith Tate Cates, who entered Baylor in 1918, and Vernon Garrett Sr., who attended Baylor from 1923-25 and later returned to the school to earn his bachelor's degree in 1963. Second generation students include Vernon Garrett Jr. and his wife, Yvonne Cates Garrett, who united the two families when they married in the 1940s.
Families who have previously received the First Families of Baylor award include the Abner McCall family, the J.M. Dawson family, and the Samuel Palmer Brooks family,
