Truett Professor to Speak on 'Priesthood of Believers'

Dr. Joel Gregory, professor of preaching at Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological seminary, will give a lecture on "The Priesthood of All Believers" at Truett Seminary's Community Gathering for Worship from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Paul W. Powell Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.
"The purpose of the Gathering is to bring together the students, staff and faculty of Truett in an experience of corporate worship," Gregory said.
Truett seeks emphasizes the nature of faith community, said Gregory. "The Gathering is an expression of the larger communal life we share together."
Gregory is a Distinguished Fellow at Georgetown University and is founder and principal of Joel Gregory Ministries, an international ministry of teaching and preaching. He received his bachelor's degree summa cum laude and a doctorate from Baylor and holds a master's in divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Gregory was elected twice as the president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and has previously served as the preacher on the International Baptist Hour. He addressed the Baptist World Alliance in Seoul, South Korea and the New Baptist Covenant in Atlanta.
Gregory is the author of "Gregory's Sermon Synopses," "Growing Pains of the Soul," "Homesick for God," "James: Faith Works" and "Too Great A Temptation." His memoir also formed the basis of "God's Man in Texas," a play performed in many community theaters.
Gregory will continue a series on Tuesday, started by his colleagues, on Baptist distinctives, or characteristics. In particular, Gregory said he will be speaking about the priesthood of the believer, the Baptist belief that every Christian has direct access to God, through Christ, in salvation, prayer, reading of Scripture and worship. He will emphasize that this direct access also involves responsibilities to other believers, the church and the world Christian mission.
"I hope that those attending will understand the privilege of access to God through Christ alone and the related responsibility that brings," Gregory said.
