Percussion Alumni To Present Recital For Retiring Professor

August 1, 2003

by Richard Veit

Dr. Larry Vanlandingham, the only professor of percussion that Baylor University has ever had, will retire from the School of Music, effective Aug. 31.
To honor his 41 years of teaching, alumni of Vanlandingham's percussion studio - who perform and teach all over the world - will present a recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in Meadows Recital Hall. He will be honored later that evening at 6:30 with a roast/retirement dinner at Baris Restaurant, which is located inside the Clarion Hotel in Waco.
In addition to his percussion studio, Vanlandingham - or "Dr. V," as he is known affectionately by his students - has been head of the instrumental division of the School of Music for two decades. He also was instrumental in developing the use of computers in the School of Music and across the university. He is past-president of the Percussive Arts Society.
