Art Exhibit To Feature Abstract Paintings, Assemblages

An art exhibit of the works of Hershall Seals, chairman of the art department at Mary Hardin-Baylor, will open Tuesday, May 27, at the University Art Gallery in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center on the Baylor University campus. A public reception for Seals will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 30.
The exhibit will feature a collection of abstract acrylic paintings and several works of assemblage art, which is similar to collage and uses various materials in combination to create an image.
Seals spent many years painting realistic landscapes before he ventured in to more abstract expressions. He says that where he once looked to the natural world for inspiration, he now looks inward to find his subject matter.
"As I work on any one or two paintings, I try to decide what is most important on my mind at the time - whether it is an event, a book I am reading or just a set of feelings I am sorting through," he said. "I try to allow the space-developing in the painting to evolve into an imaginative landscape of sorts that gives place to my mental and emotional states."
Seals' work will remain on display through July 18. The University Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and during performances of Baylor Theatre.
