Baylor's Concert Orchestra To Play April 16

Baylor University's Concert Orchestra will perform a program of music by Antonio Vivaldi, Peter Warlock, Edvard Grieg and Benjamin Britten at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in Jones Concert Hall. The orchestra, comprised mainly of non-music majors, is conducted by Dr. Lisa Maynard, assistant professor of instrumental music education.
The concert will open with a performance of Vivaldi's "Spring" Concerto from his most famous collection, The Four Seasons, Op. 8, featuring soloist Corey Spratlan, a senior music education major from Austin.
The Concert Orchestra will follow with the Capriol Suite of Peter Warlock (pseudonym of Philip Heseltine). This six-movement suite, written in 1926, remains the composer's most popular orchestral work.
From Grieg's Lyric Pieces, Op. 43, a piano collection dating from the year 1886, the ensemble will play an orchestrated version of No. 5, titled "Erotik."
The program will close with a performance of Britten's charming Simple Symphony of 1934. Its movements bear these descriptive titles: "Boisterous Bourrée," "Playful Pizzicato," "Sentimental Saraband" and "Frolicsome Finale."
