Ribbon Cutting For Library's Java City To Be Held April 9

Baylor University's Dining Services will hold a ribbon cutting for the new Java City, a café that will offer an extensive menu of coffee products, fresh baked goods, sandwiches and Fresh Market Smoothies, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, on the garden level at Moody Memorial Library. After the ceremony, the Baylor Jazz Combo will provide entertainment, while guests sample gourmet coffee and baked goods.
"Our desire in working with Baylor Dining Services was to provide something for our students to eat and drink without having to leave the library," said William Hair, associate dean and director of the Central Libraries. "Java City is the culmination of that dream. The quality and attractiveness of the finished product is beyond our expectations. From the furnishings to the culinary selections, everything is first class."
"We've wanted to provide an atmosphere where students can relax while studying into the late-night hours," said Brett Perlowski, director of Baylor Dining Services. "The new Java City at Moody Library is a perfect fit for Baylor students. It brings an environment of friendliness and relaxation while still being a place to study and prepare for classes."
Extending into the Harvey Garden, Java City will feature outdoor seating and a walkup window for ordering menu selections. The Harvey Garden was redesigned to include a small stage for live performances, teak wood bench seating and landscaping. A sound system will be added at a later date. The renovation of the garden was funded with a grant from the Schumacher Foundation of Dover, Mass.
"The Schumacher Foundation grant provided the crowning touch to the Java City project," Hair said. "Without their gift, the Harvey Garden could not have been rejuvenated and beautified. Thus the entire project would have lacked the essential component needed to make this area completely usable by our students. In fact, I have already overheard a conversation in which a student remarked just how much she loved the Harvey Garden. She told her friends that it is her favorite place to study in the library. I predict that she will not be alone in that sentiment. Everyone is thrilled with Java City."
"We are excited about the grand opening of Java City," said Rick Creel, assistant vice president of facilities and operations. "This collaborative effort with Dr. Reagan Ramsower and the Moody Library team, and Baylor Dining Services promises to provide a great atmosphere for students, faculty and staff and will assist in establishing an environment where learning can flourish."
Java City will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 pm. Friday and 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday. The café will be closed Saturday.
