Baylor History Department to Sponsor Black History Month Lecture

Baylor University's department of history will host its inaugural lecture to celebrate Black History Month from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Kayser Auditorium in Baylor's Hankamer School of Business. The lecture, titled "Be Real Black for Me: The Cultural Politics of Black Power," will feature guest speaker Waldo Martin of the University of California, Berkeley.

"It is important for everyone to remember the significant contributions that African Americans made to this country, and this lecture as part of Black History Month is a way to do that," said Julie Sweet, chair of the history department's lecture committee. This lecture is the first of its kind to be sponsored by the history department.

The lecture will feature a presentation by Dr. Martin, a professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley. Martin received his bachelor's degree from Duke University and his doctorate degree from Cal-Berkeley.

Martin has written several books, including, The Mind of Frederick Douglass, Brown v. Board of Education: A Brief History With Documents, and No Coward Soldiers: Black Cultural Politics in Postwar America (The Nathan I. Huggins Lectures).

The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a book signing.
