Baylor Amateur Radio Club to Participate in "November Sweepstakes"

The Baylor Amateur Radio Club, and anyone else who might like to discover what amateur radio is like, will be participating in the "November Sweepstakes," a contest where American and Canadian radio amateurs try to contact as many other amateurs in the two countries as possible. The contest will start at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, and will end at 9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18. The amateurs can only transmit for 24 of the 30 hours.

"It's a fun contest that gives a person experience in making contacts under adverse conditions," said Dr. Albert McDaniel, a visiting professor of chemistry at Baylor, who is the faculty advisor for the group. "These adverse conditions occur when emergencies like Katrina hit, when cell phones are worthless and normal phones aren't much better."

The Baylor team will be transmitting from Studio A, Room 131, of the Castellaw Communications Building on the Baylor campus. They will using the Baylor call sign WA5BU and will participate in the School category. McDaniel said the club is hoping to not just win the Big 12 bracket, but the entire West Gulf Region category.

All Baylor students are welcome to attend.
