The Baylor Law School mock trial team won third place at the prestigious Student Trial Advocacy Competition, sponsored by the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. The contest, held March 20-24 in New Orleans, attracted regional winners from law schools all over the nation.
Baylor defeated teams from Harvard University (last year's contest winners), the University of Alabama, and Washington University before losing in the semi-final round to the team that went on to win the competition, the University of Denver College of Law, said Baylor team coach Professor Gerald Powell.
Baylor was represented by Elizabeth Lyons of Fort Worth and Dan Sorey of Monroe, La. Their witnesses were Allen Gardner of Houston and Shauna Kinney of Rowlett. Powell said the trial involved a suit by a policy holder against his insurance company, under a disability insurance policy, for breach of contract and breach of the duty of good faith and fair dealing. The students' performances were judged by New Orleans trial lawyers.
Dean Brad Toben said the Baylor team represented the law school "magnificently" in the contest, which he described as one of the nation's premier student trial advocacy competitions. He added "Our hearty congratulations go to them for a job well done."
