Texas Alumni Needed To Rally Support For Texas Equalization Grant

The Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) program, which has provided tuition assistance to Texas students at 40 private colleges and universities in the state since 1971, is facing major cuts in the legislature. Baylor University is encouraging Texas alumni, particularly those who have benefited from this program, to ask their state legislators to protect funding for this vital program.

In the 2001-02 academic year, the TEG provided $82.2 million in grants to more than 33,000 Texas students. At Baylor, the TEG is the most significant source of federal or state grant aid, providing $10.2 million in grants to more than 3,800 Baylor students, or roughly 25 percent of the student body.
Not only does the TEG benefit thousands of Texas students, the program also is one of the most cost-effective ways to fund higher education in the state. The state pays roughly $7,500 per academic year for each student at a public university. For an average TEG of approximately $2,500, the state provides an incentive for students to consider attending a private college or university. The state saves $5,000 for every Texas student that the TEG encourages to attend a private institution instead of a public university.
The TEG is a powerful tool for the state to leverage the infrastructure and resources of private institutions, relieving pressure on public institutions and benefiting the entire higher education sector in Texas.
