Art Historian To Lecture On Gauguin March 26

March 19, 2003

Dr. Caroline Boyle Turner, director of the Pont-Aven School of Art in western France, will be the featured speaker at Baylor University's annual Allbritton Art Institute Lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in room 149 at the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Building. Turner will present a slide show/lecture on "Gauguin and the Search for the Exotic," which will address Gauguin's search for exotic subjects and their connection to western themes in art. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Turner, who received her doctorate from Columbia University, specializes in Gauguin and his disciples who worked in Pont-Aven in the 1880s. She focuses on the prints made by these artists and the group known as the Nabis. She was invited to be this year's Allbritton Speaker in observance of the centenary of Gauguin's death.
Turner is the author of the books The Prints of the Pont-Aven School: Gauguin and his Circle in Brittany and Paul Serusier.
The Allbritton Art Institute was established within Baylor's art department in 1998 by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Allbritton. The Institute promotes the appreciation and comprehensive study of the artists and art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries with special emphasis on the movements of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
