January 10, 2007

As the nation mourned the Dec. 26, 2006, death of President Gerald R. Ford, Baylor University recalled the 38th President's visit to the campus during a campaign stop in Waco on April 29, 1976. (Read the text of President Ford's speech at Baylor from the American Presidency Project.)

Surrounded by Secret Service agents, President Ford walked across the Baylor campus and shook hands with hundreds of well-wishers along Speight Avenue. He then delivered prepared remarks at Waco Hall and answered questions from the capacity audience of faculty and students on several timely topics, such as the presidential primary with then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan, the economy and the Panama Canal.

President Ford also congratulated Baylor's head football coach Grant Teaff. Following Baylor's historic year on the gridiron in 1974, it was Ford, a former Michigan letterwinner, who had presented Teaff with the 1974 Coach of the Year Award from the American Football Coaches Association.
