Students And Faculty Walk To Support Cardiovascular Research

Baylor University students, faculty and staff will participate in the 5K Heart Walk, benefiting the McLennan County American Heart Association (AHA), on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Getterman Softball Stadium on the Baylor University campus. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the walk starting at 9 a.m. and winding through the Baylor campus.
This will be the fifth year that Baylor has participated in the Heart Walk, which raises money for research and programs to promote a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Baylor's goal this year is to have 400 participants and raise $10,000 in donations. The university will recognize the individual and top two departments that raise the most money.
Heart disease accounts for 42.8 percent of the deaths in McLennan County and more than 56,000 deaths in Texas annually. Research funded by events such as the Heart Walk has saved numerous lives through many important discoveries, including CPR, life-extending drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery and surgical techniques to repair heart defects.
AHA spent $382 million during 2000-2001 on research support, public and professional education and community programs. It is the largest nonprofit voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
